PostSubject: The English Riviera   Wed Sep 08, 2010 5:04 am

Metronomy posted a link to an interview today about the new album in the making.

The title of the album is ‘The English Riviera’
Confirmed tracks - ‘We Broke Free’, ‘The Look’, ‘She Wants’
Label - 'Because'

Information about tracks.
We Broke Free - Possibly the first track on the Album, Joe's favorite so far. Described as being a statement of intent. Live feeling, and more groovy, then frantic. A slow rocker.

It's readable in it's entirety here.

http://www.the-fly.co.uk/words/features/8433/metronomy-magic

I've just summarised what i thought was the most important things in the interview, i'll probably delete it once more information comes on the album.

Being recorded in an actual recording studio, as apposed to Joe's bedroom.
Much less programming than the previous albums.
The instruments can be heard a lot more better.

More influenced by the first studio records done using technology (synthesisers and drum machines).
The album is still electronic but recorded in a traditional setting and environment, using as many real instruments as possible.
Names Herbie Hancock or Stevie Wonder records as examples synths in a traditional setting.

Album Concept.
There's two main ideas,
The change from the being 15 or 16 and going to your first house parties, having a drink and a bit of weed, the album is reminiscent of those nights. Compared to stoner records (such as: ‘Entroducing’ by DJ Shadow, or ‘The Score’ by The Fugees, or Portishead.) really down tempo. Reminds Joe of him growing up.
And coming of age. Joe wants the audience in University or their first years of to impress their roommates with this album.

This sounds like my kind of album, Metronomy and it seems to fit in with the idea of being in my first year of University, and the entire going to house parties young. I think i'm even more excited now. What does everyone else think?

I'm a bit afraid. I just hope it won't lose the specific Metronomy sound. Joe's producing a lot lately, he's better not lost his own 'tracks', see what I mean?
The concept is interesting but it's easy to do it the wrong way with such ideas, or somehow, the audience not understanding.

Black Eye/Burnt Thumb seems so very far away nowadays. Same with YCEHM, In The DOD, 1 String Strung, or that unknown track from London Calling 2006... However the fact The End Of You Too was an old song (from the Pip Paine era) and made it to Nights Out anyway reassures me, esp. if the Pip Paine era influences him for the new album. If I remember correctly Do The Right Thing was an older song too.

Wait and see, I guess Joe will be able to surprise us again? Personaly I'd just like the new album to be a bit more experimental (in a great way) than Nights Out.

Some of it is almost like stuff from the first Metronomy album, very weird electronica. And then there's some really cool pop music on there as well. We've gotten a really good response to the new songs we've played. It's going to be a lot of fun to play live."

Sounds like awesomeness.

The tracklist has been posted, you were 11 for 12. There is no song called Tens and Tens on the album.

Interesting, I guess it's gonna be a b-side or a bonus track then. Probably the latter.

Tens and Tens is indeed the iTunes bonus track... Geez I hate that habit to actually remove a mastered track from the physical release just to promote iTunes...

Need Now Future was the iTunes exclusive track when Nights Out was released... and it never made it onto the flipside of a single.

I'm personally really annoyed by this "iTunes exclusive track(s)" nonsense. Worst case that I've experienced was when The Maccabees issued the Can You Give It? single, and the only unreleased track (Young Men) was only available if you pre-ordered the single from iTunes. Absolutely ridiculous.

I hated that so much too, well done for being a Maccabees fan, one of my favourite bands.

hmm, it seems that the Japanese version of "The English Riviera" will include a bonus track, as you can see here (and in other websites): http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=WPCR-14107

Problably it'll be "Tens and Tens"...

For Record Store Day 2011 (April 16):

Metronomy
The Look / Picking Up For You
7" Unreleased track
Label: Because

I wonder how many tracks were recorded for the album?

Another B-Side?

I guess they have a few excess tracks that didn't make it in.

Nights Out had about 10 b-sides, so maybe the same number of tracks (20-something) were recorded for The English Riviera?

Oh nice! I'll defenitely get that Very Happy

What were those bsides/outtakes from the NO era? Need Now Future, Let's Have A Party, Over, Please Me, The Chase, Matthias Gathering. That's about all no? Are Mums Mates and Hear To Wear are rather from the Pip Paine era I'd say. With In The DOD, Another Me To Mother You, The Loss Of A Wheel Pt2. I guess the Wonders EP is earlier stuff. Love Song For Dog is from 2000 if I recall correctly. The 3rd from 2003. Foe And Dear is from the same era.

So far thus we only have Tens And Tens and Picking Up For You... That's better than nothing ofcourse :] Would be awesome if that japanese exclusive bonus track was yet another one :B

Edit: Oh damn, "The product listed is available only for purchase in the UK stores listed."....
Either someone from here get one and rip it, or I'll have to wait for it to make it to eBay.

Edit2: Wait, I don't get it, what is that record store day all about actually?

Hm, I think we're going to have to get someone to get the 7".
The EP on iTunes has The Look and 3 remixes, the EP and the single have no mention of the B-Side at all. Also, Tens and Tens is listed on the iTunes listing of The English Riviera online. Here are links.
The Look EP
The Look Single
The English Riviera

Based on my quick read of the wikipedia article and website.
It seems like an excuse to re-release albums or release new stuff on Vinyl. As well as exhibits and whatever else. There's a Nirvana exhibit opening, Gorillaz releasing their fourth album 2 days before the CD release, re-releases of Flaming Lips and Rolling Stone albums a new Foo Fighter's album filled with covers and there's more stuff.

There's probably a thing going on in your area. Here's the website for it. http://www.recordstoreday.com

The two Radio Ladio b-sides are confusing because they were originally released AFTER Pip Paine but then Because stuck them on the end of the reissued album for some reason. It's always confused me.

You also missed out Holiday's second b-side Our Raid, and the cover of Fascination Street.

I hope my record arrives soon!! Very Happy
