PostSubject: I have just one thing to say...   Tue Feb 24, 2009 4:36 pm

After tonight?

I FUCKING LOVE METRONOMY.

After seeing them live, FINALLY understand what all the fuss is about. Oh yes.

Gabriel really needs to sort his bass wiring out, though.

And, erm... this is the most fangirlish question in the world, but erm, is it within the realm of possibility that Erol was there? I had a .... strange encounter which I may be slightly traumatised by. Girls, he didn't have a beard when you talked to him at the Forum, did he? I couldn't quite see.

Um. Yeah. The dances. The songs. The harmonies. I'm sold.

THANK GOD.

Also, I don't remember. I don't think it was a BEARD so much as... some facial hair? But I could be remembering completely wrong. REMEMBER, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH A SHAVED EROL.

Was it proper, full on BEARD or was it just "I haven't been bothered to shave for a few days?"

Oh, what does it matter. In my head it was him. I think that Emsk and I magicked him into existence because we'd just been talking about him. Erol's Turkish Delight.

Anyway, yes. Metronomy. I love them. I suppose I should get their albums.

School me in the ways of Metronomy!

GET THE ALBUMS. GET. THEM. Then get all the b-sides because they are just as incredible. In fact, download everything on the media thread once you have the albums.

OK, OK, OK! One at a time, though. I am due to reward myself with an album because I went to a job interview today and you know that's my way of rewarding myself.

If I can only get *one* which one should I get? DON'T SAY BOTH I CAN'T AFFORD IT.

I would say for you to get pip paine first, and learn to love it, and then get nights out

but everyone will say NIGHTS OUT 112!!!!1!11!11!

do it chronologically! ;D

I've been listening to clips trying to figure out which one to get.

This is SUCH a predictable Kate thing to say, but, erm, I think I like the production on the second one better.

Also, the first one is mostly instrumentals, yes? One of the things I really liked about them was the vocal harmonies.

I guess... But, but, they are such completely utterly different albums, it makes me sad that everyone instantly jumps on Nights Out because it's a bit more accessable, more of a pop record - vocals, production etc. Pip Paine is brilliant in a very different way. That is why I think you should get both. I think they're a different band on the second album entirely.

not even a different band, they WERE a band for nights out. Pip Paine is just joe in his room. even though metronomy as a band existed, but it was a different set up in terms of writing

Yes, exactly. Sometimes I think you could see it as an entirely different project rather than a project that evolved, although I prefer it the latter way.

Yes, I just meant... I see the difference as that great sometimes, and yet, it's still the same. But not. Does that make sense?

I really like the dynamics between the three of them, as a band. So I think that would be what will appeal to me.

I will get both of them eventually, but I am SUPER SUPER SUPER SKINT (Just spent all my dole money for the week on bus passes - and I'm going out tomorrow night and Friday as well.) so I can only afford to get one right now!

Firstly, because my internet connection is shite and unless it's really late at night, it can take over an hour to grab an album.

Secondly, because I'm a record geek I LIKE having physical albums, sleeves, boxes, etc. - the whole package is important to me.

Thirdly, especially in the case of indie artists, I do try to buy things in shops in order to support the crumbling distribution structure to ensure that indie artists continue to get their records into shops and on display. Which is still kind of important to me, as an indie artist myself.

Fourthly... I just *like* record shops and could spend all bloody day in them, OM NUM NUM NUM.

There is nothing in the world like the smell of a really good indie record shop.

Except, maybe, the smell of a second hand bookshop. Oh yes. I get high just thinking about it.

Okay! I do like to have the album as well, but yeah there is the case of MONEY... If I love a band enough of course I will buy their album, but I will pretty much always download it because... I do it that way, I discover if I like something and then buy it. I think the disappointment I would feel after buying an album I don't REALLY REALLY enjoy would be horrible, I feel like I waste enough money as it is.

OK, I'm not going to go all RIAA on you here, but seriously - this is a constant topic of debate on ILX. Why is there this assumption that one has the *right* to have music for free?

Not picking on you, specifically, but it is a very general and pervasive feeling.

Is it because music is generally treated so casually - being on the radio and pervasively around one and all that.

Because I can't think of any other commodity - or, well, *artform* - since music is so much more than a commodity, that people treat this way.

I mean, think of a world where this attitude became universalised. I really really want, say, a Kate Moross t-shirt, for example, but i haven't got the money to buy one. Oh, I'll just get one for free off the internet.

I don't want to get into an argument about the mechanics of the music industry and whether CDs are overpriced (they are) or indie musicians are underpaid (they are) but it does seem to me to be a curious and quite singular state of affairs for things to have got into.

I wish I had a better internet connection, so I could do things like Spotify, where at least I'd feel slightly better that the musicians are getting some money out of it.

I'm not accusing anyone of anything, don't get me wrong. I do just think it's curious, this general attitude, and wonder how it came about.

And as to the "try before you buy" thing - another reason to love record shops. Most indie shops will let you listen before you commit to putting your money down.

I'm just trying to think how the world would be, if the attitude that people had towards music extended towards other aspects of life. Go to a restaurant, order a meal... oh, well, let me taste the food first, and if I like it, then I'll pay you for it.

LIFE DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT. (maybe it should.)

yeah but downloading and paying for a cd are like saving the picture of the kate moross t shirt and buying it

but thats a rubbish analogy because you can't use the picture of the t shirt, unless you just save the picture of the design to look at, and print off and use as posters and stuff

OK, yeah, but you do have an interesting point.

Photography is another artform where this is an issue - especially on the internet.

I do that all the time, that I d/l and save pics that I like (even ones that people try to protect on Flickr, coz I know the code.)

And a lot of professional photographers I know utterly HATE that, coz, like... that's their work that I'm essentially stealing, when they have the right to get paid for their work. But they get paid if it's used in a magazine, and I pay that indirectly through paying for the magazine. But I rarely if ever, pay for prints of photographs.

Hrmmm. Interesting analogy, actually.

(p.s. being a total fanboy here, but what band do you think Erol is excited about seeing at the NME awards? I can't imagine anyone good actually playing them. I don't know if anyone I know is there to ask.)
